Dr. Yang's first-ever California book signing and seminar event outside of the Retreat Center was a huge success.

Driving down from the Retreat Center located up in Northern California, Dr. Yang and disciples visited Fremont, CA, where they were greeted by Ms. Gigi Oh and Mr. Gene Ching of Kung Fu Tai Chi Magazine. Upon arrival, the hosts took the group out to lunch followed by an interview with Dr. Yang and a photo shoot for the magazine.

Soon after leaving Kung Fu Tai Chi Magazine, Dr. Yang and disciples rushed to Santa Cruz to drop their belongings off at the home of Mr. Tony Galis, a friend and seminar student. Dr. Yang and disciples then made their way to Gateways Bookstore in downtown Santa Cruz for a two hour long lecture and book signing. More than 50 people showed up for the event, packing the store.

Tom Dudkiewicz will unfortunately be unable to rejoin the disciples back at the Retreat Center. Tom Dudkiewicz, after suffering from injuries inflicted from an unfortunate car accident last summer break, will be unable to return to the YMAA Retreat Center as a disciple in the 10-year training program.

It is an unfortunate and unexpected turn of events, and we are sorry that he will not continue the training with us. We hope that Tom's experience at the Retreat Center has helped him advance to a better position, understanding, and awareness of his martial arts training, and his life.

YMAA Taijiquan grandmaster, Master Kao, Tao, travelled to the United States this past May 2010 to visit Dr. Yang and the students at the Retreat Center, and to teach seminars in Qigong health and longevity in Boston and Memphis. At 78 years old, Master Kao is surprisingly fit, energetic, and seemingly always the most spirited person in the room. He spent a relaxing week at the Retreat Center, teaching Qigong exercises to the disciples daily.

Master Kao taught the six Qigong healing sounds, discussed Taijiquan principles, and helped the disciples with their Chinese language studies. While at the Retreat Center, Master Kao was interviewed by Craig Atkinson, a New-York based filmmaker who has been diligently documenting the 10-year training program thus far, since 2007. Master Kao was also filmed for an instructional DVD demonstrating Qigong for Longevity, directed by David Silver and planned for release in 2011.

Several of the YMAA Retreat Center disciples will be competing in Kung Fu Tai Chi magazine's martial arts tournament on June 12, 2010.

Javier will be competing in Taijiquan and Taiji Pushing Hands. Santiago will be competing in Traditional Northern Fist. Jonathan will be competing in Traditional Northern Fist, Traditional Southern Fist, Traditional Short Weapons, Traditional Long Weapons, Taijiquan, and Taiji Short Weapons.

Jonathan and Santiago trained for several years at the YMAA branch in Andover, MA prior to starting at the Retreat Center. As such, they will be able to compete in several events and are at a decent level of caliber. Javier will be competing in just Taijiquan this time because most of his training so far has been in body conditioning and internal arts. Justin Bowman, who has been helping with some of the video shoots and operations at the Retreat Center, may also join Jonathan, Santi, and Javier on this trip, possibly to also compete in Pushing Hands.

Needle Through Brick - Kung Fu Documentary

This is an amazing documentary on the struggles of Chinese Martial Arts in the 21st century. It echoes many of the struggles, hardships, and experiences that YMAA has undergone for almost 30 years, and it also shows exactly why Dr. Yang chose to build the YMAA Retreat Center and begin perhaps the most ambitious 10-year martial arts training program of modern day.

Filmed in Malaysia, the film contains interviews with several traditional masters as well as some insight into the decline of traditional training. It also includes some history of how Modern Wushu developed in China, and how Wushu differs from Traditional Kung Fu.

Organic Garden Update - Permaculture!

The Retreat Center has been developing an organic vegetable garden for several years now.

This year, a local couple, Bo and Kacy, offered to revamp the garden in exchange for Taiji instruction. They are both students of Permaculture, and we were happy to have them share their knowledge with us.

The main goal was create a garden environment that functioned more like a natural ecosystem. After removing the soil and some old plants, new nutrient-rich soil was brought in and blanketed with a mulch for protection. Flowers were planted to attract bees. They also now help to reduce the bug and slug population, as well as add a soothing aesthetic appearance to the garden.

Zach Cohen has decided to withdraw from the 10-Year training program. After suffering all summer with fatigue and a medical condition he could not recover from, under the recommendation of his doctor, he felt he had to invest more time in his health and well-being.

Dr. Yang regrets his departure but is happy that Zach was able to join the program for the short year that he was there. We will miss Zach's high spirit and intellect. Zach describes his time at the Retreat Center as the most valuable learning experience of his life, and he is planning to apply his talents in the future to Chinese Healing Arts. Currently, Zach is searching for a school with a dual-program in Holistic Western Medicine and Classical Chinese Medicine.

We expect to stay in touch with Zach as his health improves. He has been extremely helpful in the Retreat Center's fundraising and grantwriting efforts.

Good luck Zach, we wish you success in all your endeavors!

This academic year, which began in September 2010, brings the disciples into the third phase of their training.

Now that they have spent two years training body conditioning, strength development, endurance, and stamina, they are prepared to engage in heavier training in more intermediate to advanced martial arts techniques while minimizing the chance of injury.

So far, the disciples have completed the Taijiquan Yang-Style Long Form, and basic Long Fist and White Crane Kung Fu, including Lian Bu Quan and Qi Xing. Additional training includes: Bag and Post Training, Staff Basic Training, Advanced Tumbling, and Advanced Internal Elixir Qigong Practice.

This year, a longtime student from YMAA Andover, Santiago Costello, was accepted as a new disciple after passing an extensive application and testing process. Frank Verhülsdonk, who is from Switzerland, is currently in his testing phase until the current semester is over. If accepted (as a foreign Visitor Student), he will be the last accepted student before 2013.
